Let Science Wake Up Your Eyes

If you have dark circles, shadows and puffiness beneath your eyes on a daily basis, you are probably constantly told that you look haggard and tired when you're not. Those dark circles also make you appear older than you might be. Some of us are just born with those dark circles under our eyes. Discolorations beneath the eyes are fairly common in people of certain descents, typically those with Asian or African backgrounds; but anyone can be genetically disposed to dark circles under the eyes. Dark circles can also be due to allergies, nasal congestion, sinusitis, physical or emotional stressors, smoking, drinking alcohol, or too much exposure to the sun.
As you age, you may see more and more shadowing beneath your eyes. This is due to your skin (especially the skin around your thin, delicate eye area) becoming thinner with age, showing the dark, bluish-red blood vessels more readily, which can make you look tired. Volume around the eyes around is lost, making your eyes look sunken and hollowed out. This is due to the aging process and losing collagen. Put this together with dark circles and fine lines, and you have some of the most prevalent signs of aging. According to writers at the Mayo Clinic, nothing ages you more than dark circles beneath your eyes; those shadows can make you look older then either gray hair or even wrinkles. The circles beneath the eyes usually don't crop up until you've reached adulthood, but even some children will exhibit this tired look.
